A SURPRISE PARTY by Milo McGivern
A Surprise Party by Milo McGivern is the third book in the Tales from Animaux series. The books feature short stories from the Island of Animaux which include the exploits of some of the animals resident there. The leading characters in this book are Aubrey the Turkey, Clifford the Platypus and Walli the female Warthog.
A Surprise Party is one of five short stories in the book. I would say the book is aimed at early readers, probably up to the age of about ten. I think boys would especially enjoy it, as there’s quite a few farting references! The book is 130 pages long, so not too daunting for a primary school child to read. There are funny illustrations throughout too (by Yuliya Somina) to break up the text.
The stories are well written, each broken down into smaller sections (Scenes) and the animals go on adventures which show their characteristics well. My favourite story was the final one where the evil Rick Rat tries to get a bad spell cast on Aubrey. Perhaps taking inspiration from Terry Pratchett, the rat has to visit the Weird Sisters and it’s basically a quest story.
One of my favourite characters was Sadie the Stick Insect who is the island’s resident dentist and completes her examinations by climbing into her patient’s mouth.
It’s a fun book for children and I’m sure most readers would enjoy it.
